Christina, a former collegiate sprinter, battled crippling hypoglycemia and painful gut problems that ended her Olympic dreams. After rediscovering red meat and embracing a strict keto-carnivore diet, her blood-sugar crashes vanished and digestive pain disappeared. Four-plus years later she races faster than ever, winning four Masters national titles in the 800 m and 1500 m while raising three children and staying medication-free.

From Soccer to World-Class Runner on a Keto-Carnivore Diet

Early Athletic Success and Hidden Struggles
Growing up on hearty Midwestern casseroles, Christina excelled at every sport she tried. In college she traded beef for “healthier” grilled chicken, salads and protein shakes, trusting the low-fat, high-carb blueprint coaches recommended. Her raw speed moved her from soccer to track, and as a sophomore she blazed a 58-second 400-meter despite barely knowing how to exit the blocks. Two All-American honors followed, yet each race carried a secret cost: severe hypoglycemia. No matter how many bagels or sports drinks she consumed, her blood sugar often crashed so hard she blacked out after crossing the line.

Health Decline and Abandoned Dreams
Approaching graduation, Christina’s gut pain joined the blood-sugar roller coaster. Bloating and stabbing cramps grew so intense that the Olympic future she imagined faded. Reluctantly she shelved her spikes, became a teacher and coach in rural Nebraska, married and welcomed two daughters—still plagued by stomach distress and unpredictable fainting spells.

A Flu, a Book and a Radical Change
On her thirtieth birthday influenza pinned her to bed. Scrolling for distraction she discovered Dr. Ken Berry’s Lies My Doctor Told Me. The message to reclaim nutrient-dense animal foods resonated. She added red meat back to her plate and, within a month, her gut settled and energy stabilized. Intrigued, she dove deeper and committed fully to a keto-carnivore diet—meat, eggs and animal fats, strict on carbs and seed oils. Four and a half years later she has not endured a single hypoglycemic episode.

Rekindled Passion and Record Performances
Freed from digestive agony and sugar crashes, Christina’s competitive spark reignited. A coach urged her to target Masters middle-distance events. Training on steak and eggs, she sculpted more muscle in her mid-thirties than she carried in college and flashed a six-pack for the first time. Pregnancy with her third child hardly slowed her; eating keto-carnivore throughout, she joked that she was “building him on steak and eggs.” Fatigue was minimal, and seven weeks postpartum she resumed full training.

National Titles and Global Goals
A decade after saying goodbye to elite sport, Christina now specializes in the 800 m, clocking world-class times. Over the past two seasons she captured four U.S. Masters national crowns in the 800 m and 1500 m and earned a coveted place on Team USA for the 2023 World Masters Championships in Toruń, Poland. She beams, “I can’t wait to pull on that uniform.”

Thriving on Keto-Carnivore
Christina credits the keto-carnivore diet for stable blood sugar, zero gut distress, rapid postpartum recovery and the strength to juggle motherhood, teaching and world-level racing. Her story reminds athletes and everyday movers alike that returning to nutrient-rich animal foods can restore health, unlock untapped performance and keep dreams alive long after the final college whistle.
