Years of obesity, crippling osteoarthritis and relentless menopausal symptoms left her on a pharmacy’s worth of painkillers and barely able to walk. A gradual shift from gluten-free to an elimination approach led her to a keto-carnivore diet. Within months she dropped seventy pounds, hiked six-mile coastal trails, slept without medication and saw every hot flash, tinnitus episode and arthritic flare vanish.

From Childhood Diets To Chronic Pain
My battle with weight began at nine when a doctor handed me a 1 000-calorie plan—a pattern that hardened into cycles of binge eating and restrictive attempts that never lasted. By forty-two I tipped the scale between 210 and 270 pounds and learned that the stabbing fire in both feet was osteoarthritis. Six months later the same “wear and tear” erupted in every finger. Three consultants dismissed inflammatory arthritis and confirmed osteoarthritis, leaving me with injections and an ever-growing list of pills.
Living On Pills And Losing Mobility
By late 2014 my daily routine required eight paracetamol, eight tramadol, six naproxen and amitriptyline to sleep. When naproxen ulcerated my stomach, gabapentin replaced it—nine capsules a day. Even with that cocktail I shuffled a hundred metres on a stick and ate with special cutlery because my hands refused to grip.
A Gluten-Free Surprise
Health’s first faint whisper arrived in September 2017 when my partner cut gluten to soothe his stomach. I copied him for convenience and, within weeks, the lifelong food cravings muted. The discovery stunned me: perhaps my hunger ruled me only because certain foods ruled my hunger.
From Elimination To Keto-Carnivore
Early 2018 brought Jordan and Mikhaila Peterson’s stories, then Joe Rogan’s conversation with them. Their transformations echoed through videos by Amber O’Hearn and Dr. Shawn Baker—veteran keto-carnivores proving the lifestyle sustainable. On 12 June 2018 I committed fully. First I dropped vegetables, then settled into meat and eggs only. By 1 July I left my walking stick at home for an eighty-year-old’s birthday party. Days later I explored Whitby’s cobbled streets pain-free. By mid-July I trekked miles without a twinge.
Returning To The Trail
New hiking boots in August reopened the coastal paths we once loved, and six-mile dawn walks became ritual. September found us rambling the Lake District from dawn to dusk exactly as I had before arthritis struck. The change felt miraculous.
Shedding Pills And Pounds
That summer I tackled the medicine cabinet. Weaning off five-year tramadol dependence was brutal—sleepless nights, twitching limbs—but each half-capsule dropped felt like reclaiming a fragment of myself. Gabapentin followed, then paracetamol. By the end of September I swallowed no medication. My doctor, puzzled yet uninterested, “had never heard of such a thing.” Between May and December I lost seventy pounds, shrinking so quickly that university friends failed to recognize me after the break.
Menopause And Other Miracles
Hot flashes and tinnitus had flared alongside the arthritis; both vanished on keto-carnivore. Old medical texts called it “menopausal arthritis,” and Dr. Blake Donaldson once treated it with low-carb meat diets—now I understood why. Occasional flares reminded me that pudding, brandy sauce or chemical sprays still trigger inflammation, yet pain-free days have dominated nearly two years.
Experimenting With Fasting
Meat’s satiety made skipping meals effortless. Regular forty-hour fasts shrank my appetite and taught me, for the first time, what fullness feels like. Approaching fifty, I hike, swim and train with a vitality I never imagined during those drug-dulled years.
Looking Forward
I entered keto-carnivore expecting little because “my arthritis was different.” Instead I gained my life back: no pills, no stick, no hot flashes, no cravings. The coast at sunrise, the quiet hum where tinnitus used to ring and the steady rhythm of strong feet on a mountain path remind me every day that I will never return to my former life—a life smothered by painkillers and powered by sugar. The future is energetic, adventurous and unapologetically keto-carnivore.
