How Revero’s Low-Carbohydrate Diet Works

Revero uses a low-carbohydrate diet to treat the root causes of metabolic, autoimmune, and inflammatory diseases. The diet includes real foods like meats, low-carb veggies, berries, nuts, full-fat cream, butter, and cheese. Main meals typically consist of a plate full of meat with 1-2 sides of low-carb veggies.

Good fats for preparing food and dressing salads are ghee, butter, cream, macadamia nut oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil, tallow, lard, and other types of animal fat. Sugary drinks or beer are not allowed, although sugar-free sodas sweetened with sucralose, stevia, erythritol, or xylitol are okay. Hard liquor and dry wine are permitted but should be avoided as much as possible.

Only 30 grams of carbs or less are allowed per day, and half of these should be derived from low-carbohydrate vegetables as well as a small amount of nuts, cheese, meaty snacks like bacon strips or beef jerky, or berries for desserts or snacks, and a few from hidden sources.

When the body is given the nutrients it needs while simultaneously removing most carbohydrate sources from grains, inflammatory and starchy vegetables, processed foods, and manufactured oils, the body’s metabolism begins to heal. Insulin sensitivity and appropriate appetite and satiety signaling can recover, all working together to promote health and wellness. This is designed to restore metabolic health, especially for patients with metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes.

After the initial phase, Revero will provide an individualized nutrition plan. This personalized nutrition therapy is set by protocols based on the patient's unique demographics and health conditions. Revero will systematically remove foods known to cause high blood sugar, inflammation, or other symptoms and reintroduce them as required. This phase lasts four to eight months.

Treating the Root Cause Of Metabolic Conditions

Revero uses a low-carbohydrate diet to treat the underlying causes of metabolic disease, with the goal of reducing blood glucose levels, restoring insulin sensitivity, and reducing insulin needs.

Limiting carbohydrate consumption helps stabilize blood sugar. Also, the pancreas won’t need to produce as much insulin since fats don’t break down into sugars. This applies to insulin from the pancreas and insulin from medication, for patients who are taking it. The body gets its energy from the fats consumed from food and stored fat. The ability to burn fats for fuel improves over time.

A ketogenic diet will provide more energy while requiring less insulin and improving blood sugar stability. This is much healthier for the metabolism.

When eating a low-carb diet, high insulin levels are no longer needed to move glucose from the bloodstream into cells so insulin levels can return to normal. Lower insulin levels will lower how much fat the body stores. Also, the body will use the fat it has already stored for fuel.

Fat-adapted means that the body can use the body's fat for fuel instead of being fully dependent on carbohydrates. This will result in weight loss. The Revero diet also allows patients to eat tasty food that provides great satiety without starvation, counting every calorie, or needing to exercise. This powerful combination of effects targets the cause of obesity, making it possible to consistently lose weight without persistent hunger.

Revero also targets the root cause of hypertension by using a low-carbohydrate diet to treat insulin resistance. This approach can reduce high blood pressure sustainably without incurring the side effects of medications. Consuming less carbohydrates lowers insulin levels and restores insulin sensitivity, which reduces fluid retention, lowers blood pressure, and relaxes blood vessels.

Treating the Root Cause Of Inflammatory Conditions

Revero also uses a low-carbohydrate diet to treat inflammatory diseases and reduce systemic inflammation in the body by:

  • eliminating phytotoxins, allergens, processed foods, sugars, and seed oils
  • restoring gut health
  • nourishing the body with proper nutrition
  • reducing the production of pro-inflammatory compounds from insulin resistance
  • providing the anti-inflammatory properties of ketosis

Eliminating processed foods and sugars

The low-carb diet eliminates processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and added sugars---major contributors to inflammation. These processed foods often contain unhealthy oils and additives that can also trigger inflammatory responses.

Lowering blood glucose and insulin levels

A low-carb diet also eliminates foods that cause spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. Reduced insulin levels help lower inflammation in the body, due to decreased insulin resistance, reduction in the activation of pro-inflammatory pathways, and lower oxidative stress. It also helps lower blood pressure, improve blood flow, and reduce vascular inflammation.

Restoring gut health

By removing the ultra-processed foods, grains, and other phytotoxins, a low-carb diet also helps gut healing. Consuming foods, like grains and legumes, high in inflammatory phytotoxins such as oxalates and lectins results in systemic inflammation. Their removal from the diet reduces inflammation, particularly in individuals sensitive to these foods.

Improving nutritional status

A low-carb diet emphasizes whole, nutrient-rich foods like meats which offer nutrition in the most bioavailable format and nourish the body. These foods are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, have anti-inflammatory properties, and help combat oxidative stress (a key factor in inflammation).

Generating ketone bodies which have anti-inflammatory properties

A low-carb diet can further help reduce inflammation by putting patients in ketosis. Ketone bodies have anti-inflammatory properties. They act like mini fire extinguishers in the body. They fight inflammation by modulating the production of inflammatory molecules, reducing oxidative stress, cleaning up harmful free radicals, helping the mitochondria, and protecting the brain cells.

Regulating Hormones

A low-carb diet can also positively influence hormone regulation by reducing insulin levels, balancing hunger and satiety hormones like leptin and ghrelin, and lowering cortisol levels. Additionally, it supports thyroid function, balances sex hormones, potentially increases testosterone levels, reduces inflammation, and improves sleep quality.

Improving Brain Function

A low-carb diet can also enhance brain function by providing ketones as an alternative and efficient fuel source for the brain, especially when glucose is less available. This can improve cognitive performance, concentration, and reduce brain fog.

Additionally, ketones have neuroprotective properties, potentially reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, which are factors in neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, a more stable blood sugar prevents the highs and lows in energy that can affect mental clarity and focus.

The Clinical Support

Type 2 diabetics will monitor their blood glucose levels using a meter that Revero provides. Those with hypertension will check their blood pressure daily. For those individuals, we will supply an automatic blood pressure cuff. As these patients progress through the diet, their blood pressure and glucose levels will be monitored by their Revero provider, who will adjust medications accordingly.

Revero provides ketone urine test strips so patients can check their ketones every morning. Diabetics should check their ketones when they test their blood glucose. You can also check your ketones at other times, to see how your body is burning fat for fuel!

Labwork such as a comprehensive metabolic profile, lipid profile, and HbA1C may be ordered for certain patients upon acceptance into the program. These may be repeated at intervals throughout the program.

Patients will weigh themselves as recommended by their clinical team, using their scale, and enter that information into the Revero app.

Revero's program is designed to address the root causes of chronic conditions by using a low-carbohydrate diet, comprehensive medical supervision, and evidence-based clinical protocols.
