Nolan, approaching 40, noticed typical aging signs like decreased energy, easier weight gain, and joint pain from old hockey and ankle injuries. After learning about the carnivore diet from a friend who recommended Dr. Shawn Baker's Joe Rogan appearance, he switched to eating primarily ribeye steaks. Over 2+ years, he lost 35-40 pounds (from 225-230 to 190-195), dramatically increased energy levels, reduced joint pain, and maintained an active lifestyle including hockey and CrossFit.

Nolan's Pre-Keto-Carnivore Health Status
Nolan, approaching 40 years old, had always been a pretty healthy and active guy. However, he began noticing the typical signs of aging - he didn't have as much energy as he used to when playing hockey or soccer, got tired more quickly, and packed on pounds more easily than in his younger years.

Additionally, Nolan dealt with lingering issues from past injuries. At 22, he had knee surgery after tearing his ACL, MCL, and part of his meniscus. At 26, he broke his left ankle. Both of these old injuries would ache when the weather was particularly cold, if he stepped wrong, or trained too hard.

Discovering the Keto-Carnivore Diet
Nolan learned about the keto-carnivore diet through a friend who told him about Dr. Shawn Baker. After listening to Dr. Baker's podcast appearance on Joe Rogan and researching his work, Nolan decided to give the diet a try.

He went straight into eating ribeye steaks, which he had always enjoyed but previously only ate once a month or every couple of weeks. Now they became a daily staple. His typical meals consisted mostly of ribeyes, sometimes bacon, and occasionally eggs in the morning.
For beverages, Nolan drinks coffee - specifically homemade cold brew with nothing added. For seasoning, he keeps it simple with just salt and pepper.

Transition Experience
Nolan experienced some difficulty only on the very first day of the keto-carnivore diet. He felt almost flu-like symptoms - feeling achy and weird, though not with typical cold symptoms like sniffling. He attributes this to his poor diet leading up to the change, as he had been "eating whatever he wanted."

The flu-like feeling went away after the first day. Interestingly, when he went off the diet for a couple of weeks after being strict for six months and then returned to it, he experienced that first-day feeling again. However, subsequent breaks and returns to the diet haven't caused the same reaction, suggesting his body has adjusted.

Daily Food Intake and Routine
Nolan typically eats about one pound of ribeye per day, cut thick at about inch and a half to two inches. On workout days, he'll eat closer to two ribeyes and maybe some eggs or something extra. On non-workout days, he sticks to one ribeye and eggs.

Remarkable Results
Nolan has been following the keto-carnivore diet for over two years with impressive results:

Weight Loss:
He started at around 225-230 pounds and within the first eight months dropped to 190-195 pounds, where he has maintained his weight since then.

Energy Improvements: One of the most noticeable benefits has been increased energy. Previously, he needed at least two 16-ounce cold brews per day to stay awake at work. Now he's down to one that he barely finishes.

Joint Pain Relief: The knee and ankle that used to bother him from his old injuries don't hurt as much as they used to. He continues to play hockey, do CrossFit, and maintain an active workout routine.

Nolan estimates he began noticing the energy improvements and joint pain relief around 4-6 months into the diet, though he admits his memory isn't perfect on the exact timing since he didn't track those specific benefits.

Medical Validation
About a year and a half to two years into the diet, Nolan got blood work done and had a physical. His doctor, who doesn't promote any particular diet, looked at his test results and told him everything looked good and to keep doing what he was working. This was particularly encouraging since Nolan had expected different results and his doctor was supportive despite not being a proponent of the keto-carnivore approach.

Long-term Success
The primary reason Nolan started the keto-carnivore diet was weight loss, which he tracked meticulously in a spreadsheet due to his background in finance. However, the additional benefits like increased energy and reduced joint pain were unexpected bonuses that have kept him committed to this way of eating for over two years.
